Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the option to question particular calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
