The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
