The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
